In 2014, members of the Prospect Missionary Baptist Church became concerned about a historic cemetery located in a wooded area south of Old Mayfield Road in the Stokesland Community of Danville that was being used as a dumping area for tires and debris. Several church members formed the Southside African American Cemetery Preservation Society to clean-up and restore the cemetery.

Members of the organization believe that cemeteries should be considered sacred places where ancestors’ remains are at peace. The organization also believes that historic cemeteries can be used for educational purposes and is researcing the Flippen Cemetery and the people buried there so the larger community can be made aware of the rich history of the African American people of the Stokesland Community and of Danville.
